Abstract

Vancomycin and teicoplanin are glycopeptide antibiotics used to treat severe gram-positive bacterial infections such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. Several cross-reaction cases have been reported between these two drugs. A 61-year-old woman has a history of eosinophilia and systemic rash after vancomycin treatment. For the infection treatment of this patient, teicoplanin was chosen instead of vancomycin to avoid adverse drug reactions. However, neutropenia occurred after 8 days of teicoplanin administration. The neutropenia of this patient recovered after discontinuation of teicoplanin with administration of filgrastim. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of cross-reaction between vancomycin and teicoplanin and be cautious in the treatment.
